UK-based Filipina painter Ivee Olivares-Mellor presents her renditions for the ecological fable “The King and the Royal Trees” at 1/of Gallery in Serendra beginning September 14, 2007.
The suite of paintings and the story will be included in the upcoming Canvas publication of a trio of environmental tales visually rendered by three Magsaysay female artists, Anita Magsaysay-Ho, Plet Bolipata, and Ivee Olivares-Mellor.

“Loss Realized” by Ivee Mellor
While studying sculpture and painting at the prestigious Chelsea College of Art and Design, Ivee participated in and helped organize a group exhibition at the Fridge Gallery, an alternative art venue, and an installation exhibition at the Moravian Cemetery in London. In 1998, she held a well-received solo exhibition at the Hamilton Place in Park Lane, London.
In April 2002, Ivee returned to the Philippine art scene via sold-out exhibits with fellow artist Plet Bolipata at the Drawing Room and the West Gallery. In 2003, she again held a highly successful show at the Drawing Room.
Her usual subjects are landscapes loosely based on the English countryside as well as her memories of her home province of Zambales. Her pieces are introspective explorations of the sublime and abstract qualities of nature. The acrylic works, with their unique lines tempered with washes of color, convey energy and emotion as well as gentleness.
For the children’s book project, Ivee departs from her usual style using circles as her inspiration and motif to symbolize the presence and threat of the south wind. The circles underpin the structures and provide the framework of the drawings.
Ivee Olivares-Mellor currently resides in West Sussex, England.
“The King and the Royal Trees” runs until September 23, 2007.
